Defense procurement is unlike any other sector: the buyer specifies a device today that has to still be available and supportable in five to seven years, has to survive environmental conditions the datasheet can’t fully capture, and has to pass electromagnetic and country-of-origin compliance checks before the first unit is delivered. The user in the field is operating from a vehicle, a forward operating base or a dismounted position; the workload is C4ISR (command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance), route planning, targeting support, logistics and BFT (blue force tracking).
